DaisukeĀ has a mom, a dad, and an older sister named Jun. They live in the same apartment complex as the Yagami family in Odaiba, and were present during the Vamdemon attack in 1999, when they were all taken hostage by the Bakemon at Big Sight.

Daisukeā€™s family life

Mr. & Mrs. Motomiya

Daisuke’s father works in publishing and is an acquaintance of Takeruā€™sĀ mother, who is an investigative reporter. Daisuke’s mother appears to be a stay-at-home mother. Neither of them are named in the show.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“Assault! BlackWarGreymon,” 02 #35: When Ken visits Daisuke’s home for a sleepover, the Motomiyas are thrilled to learn their son has made friends with a genius. They treat him like a celebrity, planning to order a fancy dinner for him and asking him to tutor their son, embarrassing Daisuke.

Motomiya Jun

Daisuke’s sister Jun is older than him by six years, starting her second year in high school (equivalent to a high school junior in the U.S.). She has an immature, annoying, and fangirlish personality. She crushes easily and incessantly on boys outside of her age group, first on Yamato, who she tries to coerce into going on a date with her and follows to a campsite, and then on Kido Shuu, who she falls in love with when he drops Daisuke off one night after she’d had her heart broken when she saw Yamato rescue Sora instead of her. She can be quite mean to Daisuke, getting into verbal and physical fights with him and apparently spreading rumors about him. They don’t get along.

Important Moments With Daisuke & Ken

“King of Darkness, Digimon Kaiser,” 02 #04: After one of Yamato’s concerts, Jun asks him and then Takeru to sign her shirt. While speaking to them she finds out that Takeru is in the same class as Daisuke, and insults Daisuke by remarking that Daisuke is not cute, unlike Takeru. Later, Yamato, Takeru, and HikariĀ scold him for speaking ill of his sister when he guesses correctly that she had insulted him.

“Follow the Kaiser’s Base,” “The Synthetic Monster, Chimairamon,” “Transcendent Evolution! Gold Magnamon,” and “Goodbye, Ken-chan…” 02 #18-21: When Jun finds out that Daisuke is going on a camping trip with Yamato, she invites herself along and gets left behind when Yamato tricks her into waiting on the curb for him to give her a “present.” She ends up hitchhiking all the way to their campsite and having to take the bus home with Yamato when there’s not enough room in the van for her to ride with the group.

Ken has a mom, a dad, and a deceased older brother named Osamu. They live in Tamachi, in apartment 303 at a complex called Tamachi Mansion.

Kenā€™s backstory

Mr. and Mrs. Ichijouji

Ken’s parents are not named in the show, but he calls them Papa and Mama. Ken’s father works at a computer company, the same one that employs Oikawa Yukio. Ken’s mother works part-time at a cafe. When Ken and Osamu were children, their parents lavished their attention on the genius Osamu and didn’t realize that they were neglecting Ken and putting too much pressure on Osamu. When Ken returns from the Digital World and falls into a deep sleep, they finally realize the mistakes their mistakes and strive to be better parents. They are very protective of Ken, and Ken’s mom is prone to crying when she sees him thriving with his new friends.

Important Moments with Ken & Daisuke

“The Evil Ring’s Rampaging Magic,” 02 #9: Ken’s parents are worried when he doesn’t come out of his bedroom and skips school. They break open the door and find that he’s not in his room at all, having run off to live full time in the Digital World, leaving just his computer and a note that reads all too much like a declaration of suicidal intent. They call the police and are seen outside talking to the officers when Daisuke’s group arrives to investigate the identity of the Kaiser.

“When The Digivice Is Tainted by Darkness,” 02 #23: Upon Ken’s return to the real world, the Ichijoujis go on their own journey through their past while Ken sifts through his memories in his sleep, trying to re-find his heart. They realize that their children were never allowed to just be children growing up due to the pressure placed on Osamu to keep his grades up and on Ken to live up to him, and when Ken wakes up they beg for his forgiveness and promise to strive to be better parents to him.

“Assault! BlackWarGreymon,” 02 #35: Ken stops at a phonebooth in Odaiba to call his mom and ask if it’s okay to eat dinner at Daisuke’s house. She enthusiastically gives him permission and is shown crying tears of joy at the knowledge that he has made friends. Presumably, he calls her later to ask to stay the night as well.

“The Gate of Darkness,” 02 #45: Ken’s parents are worried sick when he gets home late without calling. His father scolds him for making his mother cry, but unbeknownst to them, he’d just been kidnapped. He decides he has to tell them what’s been going on and finally introduces them to Wormmon.

Ichijouji Osamu (Sam)

Ken once had an older brother Osamu, who was three years older than him. Osamu was a prodigy child with a genius-level intellect who received all the attention from their parents and strangers alike. Hidden in his shadow, Ken felt that he had nothing. Ken came to envy him and, angry after he’d claimed Ken’s Digivice as his own, wished for him to disappear. Soon after that, Osamu was killed in a car crash. Ken blames his own dark wish for his death and is wracked with immense guilt. At his funeral, Oikawa learns of Ken and later sends the anonymous email that lures him to the Dark Ocean, where his Digivice becomes a Dark D-3 and activates his Dark Seed.

Important Moments with Ken & Daisuke

“When The Digivice Is Tainted by Darkness,” 02 #23: While Ken is in his deep sleep upon returning to the real world, he sifts through his memories of Osamu while looking for his heart. He remembers how they used to blow bubbles together, and how Osamu told Ken he was better at it because he was gentle. He comes to realize that his anger toward Osamu was misplaced, and in the end is able to apologize and thank him for all he did for him.

“The Last Armor Evolution,” 02 #49: When BelialVamdemon casts his Mind Illusion on Ken, he has to watch himself be tortured and apparently killed by the Digimon he’d enslaved as the Digimon Kaiser. Then Osamu appears and welcomes him to an afterlife free of guilt. Wormmon is able to help him recognize that none of what he’s seeing is real and that he has to accept his guilt and move on from it, not run away from it in death.

Below are the various other characters, human and Digimon alike, who interact with Daisuke and Ken throughout the series. The characters are listed in chronological order.

Before Digimon Adventure 02

On August 3rd, 1999, Vamdemon holds the families of Odaiba prisoner at the Tokyo Big Sight convention center, including Daisuke and his family. During this experience, Daisuke sees a boy with goggles, who he later learns is Taichi, and decides to wear goggles as a symbol of the strength he needs to protect his loved ones.

When Ken goes on his first adventure in the Digital World in 2000, he is accompanied by Ryou. They are separated almost immediately after reaching the Digital World, which is when Ken meets his partner Wormmon, but they come back together to defeat Millenniumon.

When Millenniumon releases his Dark Seeds, Ken pushes Ryou, the true target, out of the way and gets hit in the back of the neck. After Ken is well enough to return to the Real World, Ryou goes on another adventure and eventually to the Tamers universe. Ken never sees him again and has no real memory of him.

On Ken’s first trip to the Digital World in 2000, he and Ryou fight and defeat this evil Digimon, but upon his death, he releases his Dark Seeds, one of which embeds in Ken’s neck and makes him incredibly ill.

Once he is well, the Dark Seed makes Ken smarter and more athletic and helps create his Digimon Kaiser persona, but the Seed must be fertilized by negative thoughts for this to develop.

Throughout the series, many villains target Ken for his Dark Seed.

Digimon Adventure 02

Michael & other New York Chosen

Michael is a Chosen ChildĀ from America and Mimi’s friend. During the World Tour, he and several other American Chosen Children help Daisuke and Mimi round up some wild Digimon in New York City. His dad is an American movie star.

Wallace is a Chosen Child from America. At age four, a DigiTama came through his mother’s computer, and he met his two twin Digimon, Gummymon and Chocomon. While the Digimon were still babies, Chocomon got infected and disappeared. During his search for Chocomon, Wallace moved from his childhood home in Summer Memory, Colorado to New York City.

When Chocomon captures and de-ages anyone with a Digivice like Wallace’s during his search for the young Wallace he remembers, including the original Chosen Children, Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori travel to America to meet up with TakeruĀ and HikariĀ and run in to Wallace. At Summer Memory, they are forced to destroy Chocomon by evolving Terriermon, Gummymon’s Child form, and V-mon into Rapidmon and Magnamon with the Digimentals of FateĀ and Miracles, and Chocomon reforms as a DigiTama. Wallace, Terriermon, and Lopmon, Chocomon’s Child form, are shown together in Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

Hurricane Touchdown!! / Transcendent Evolution!! The Golden Digimentals: On the way to Summer Memory, Daisuke and Wallace and their Digimon are left behind and become friends. Wallace is very secretive, and Daisuke figures out that Chocomon was Wallace’s Digimon partner and becomes very empathetic and upset at the fact that they will probably have to kill Chocomon.

The Door to Summer: Daisuke meets up with Wallace and Mimi in New York City. At the time, Chocomon’s DigiTama has still not hatched.

Archnemon (Arukenimon) & Mummymon

Archnemon and Mummymon were created by Oikawa Yukio by combining data with his own DNA so that he could experience the Digital World through them. Archnemon can use strands of her hair to turn Dark Towers into artificial Digimon to fight the Chosen Children.

As Oikawa’s henchmen, they play an important role in manipulating Ken as the Digimon Kaiser and continue to wreak havoc on the Digital World afterward. Unlike most Digimon, they can travel freely between the Real and Digital Worlds, and Archnemon activates the Dark Towers after Ken’s reign as the Kaiser ends.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“Warrior of the Earth, Ankylomon,” 02 #24: This is Archnemon’s first on-screen appearance, in which she appears in Ken’s bedroom at night. When he asks who she is, she recites Oikawa’s letter, which caused him to travel to the Dark Ocean.

“Knight of the Skies, Aquilamon” 02 #25: The Chosen Children learn Archnemon can turn Dark Towers into artificial Digimon.

“Jogress Evolution Now, Two Hearts Become One” 02 #26: Archnemon appears on Ken’s computer and speaks directly to him, toying with him and refusing to give him any straight answers about why he was chosen to become the Digimon Kaiser to stall him.

“Bug Charmer’s Trap!!” & “Archnemon, the Spider Woman’s Mistake,” 02 #28-29: Archnemon lures the group into a trap and reveals she is a Digimon in a human-like disguise. When they defeat her, Mummymon comes to her aid, demonstrating that he too is a Digimon who can look like a human in the process.

“Terror! BelialVamdemon,” 02 #48: Archnemon and Mummymon are murdered by BelialVamdemon in the World of Dreams, which strikes great fear into the hearts of the Chosen Children. Daisuke is determined to fight, but Ken is too shaken up to stand with him.

An Ultimate Digimon created from one hundred Dark Towers, BlackWarGreymon is too powerful for Archnemon and Mummymon to control. Instead of following order, he has an existential crisis about whether he has a soul and, deciding he is only meant for battle, runs off in search of his perfect opponent, destroying the Holy StonesĀ in the process, destabilizing the Digital World. Once Qinglongmon convinces him his life could have purpose, he sacrifices it to rebuild the barrier between worlds and blocking the natural Digital Gate at Hikarigaoka.

Shuu is Jou’s second oldest brother who transfers from premed to humanities after attending one of Professor Takenouchi’s (Sora’s dad) lectures. The two of them are introduced when Miyako travels to Kyoto for a school trip.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“The Deadly Battle Against the Dark Digimon” & “The Gate of Darkness,” 02 #44-45: Shuu drives the Chosen Children in their chase after Oikawa’s van when Ken is kidnapped and home afterward. When he drops off Daisuke and apologizes for their son’s tardiness, Jun instantly crushes on him.

Homeostasis & Agents, including Gennai

Homeostasis is a powerful, godlike entity who seeks to keep balance in the Digital World, but as it has no form, it must possess people to communicate (Hikari in Adventure and tri., though flashbacks in tri. also revealed it once possessed Himekawa Maki). This is the entity who chose the Chosen Children and created their Digivices, Crests, and partner Digimon. Gennai and those like him are agents of Homeostasis, and the four Holy Beasts, including Qinglongmon, help keep the balance of the Digital World.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“The Gigantic Ultimate, Qinglongmon,” 02 #37: The group calls upon the powerful Holy Beast Qinglongmon when they try to move a Holy Stone with their D-3s, and he explains how the Dark Towers had sealed the Holy Beasts away and about the origin of Armor evolution.

“All Sally Out! Imperialdramon!,” 02 #39: Gennai receives one of Qinglongmon’s DigiCores and gives that power to the Chosen Children so they can reach Perfect and Ultimate forms again. This causes Paildramon to evolve to Imperialdramon: Dragon Mode to protect Daisuke and Ken.

Oikawa Yukio was best friends with Hida Hiroki, Iori’s father, when they were in middle school. They became obsessed with communicating with the Digital World through video games until Hiroki’s father and Iori’s grandfather, Hida Chikara, forced them to stop. After university, Oikawa started working as a geneticist at the same company where Mr. Ichijouji works, and Hiroki became a police officer. When Hiroki died in the line of duty before they were able to travel to the Digital World, Oikawa became severely depressed and sacrificed his body to VenomVamdemonĀ upon his defeat in 1999, with the promise that he would one day travel to the Digital World.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“The Deadly Battle Against the Dark Digimon,” 02 #44: The Chosen Children first encounter Oikawa when he and his minions Archnemon and Mummymon kidnap Ken. Oikawa explains their shared history to Ken and scans his neck to copy the Dark Seed into a group of children who want to be smart and fast and powerful like Ken was.

“Terror! BelialVamdemon,” 02 #48: Oikawa opens the Hikarigaoka gate to the Digital World, but they land in the World of Dreams instead. Here, Vamdemon harvests the Dark Seed children to form his own body and become BelialVamdemon.

“Our Digital World,” 02 #50: After BelialVamdemon’s defeat, the reformed Oikawa gives his life to rejuvenate the Digital World, but not before finally meeting his partner Digimon, Pipimon.

Chichos is a young Chosen Child from Mexico who meets up with Ken and YamatoĀ to round up some lost Digimon in the third World Tour episode (#42). She has a crush on Ken and fights Wormmon for his attention, though when Wormmon evolves to Stingmon and saves her, she adores him.

Demon is a great Demon Lord Digimon, a fallen version of the Holy Digimon Seraphimon, and leader of the Demon Corps, composed of SkullSatamon, LadyDevimon, and MarineDevimon. He is so powerful he can open the gate between the Real and Digital World. Like Oikawa, he wants Ken’s Dark Seed and is willing to hurt anyone and anything to get it.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“The Gate of Darkness,” 02 #45: Demon stops Oikawa’s van, but as Oikawa has already copied the Dark Seed, he tries to hand Ken over to Demon only for Daisuke, V-mon, and Wormmon to rescue him. As the group cannot defeat Demon, Ken uses his Dark D-3 to open a gate to the World of Darkness.

During the World Tour, these lonely children are kidnapped by Archnemon and Mummymon, at Oikawa’s bidding, with the promise that they will make them smart and good at sports like Ichijouji Ken. Oikawa and his minions use them to manipulate Ken and copy his Dark Seed to implant into their necks.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“The Deadly Battle Against the Dark Digimon,” 02 #44: Ken meets the children in Oikawa’s van and tries to convince them they don’t want the Dark Seed, but they won’t listen.

“Terror! BelialVamdemon,” 02 #48: The children help Oikawa open the Digital Gate in Hikarigaoka but travel to the World of Dreams instead. While there, Oikawa harvests the Dark Seeds, and it is revealed their true purpose was to create Vamdemon’s new body, BelialVamdemon.

“Our Digital World,” 02 #50: When the Dark Seed children express frustration and sorrow at the idea that they’re worthless, the darkness in their hearts feeds BelialVamdemon’s power. When Daisuke, Ken, and the others encourage them to believe in their dreams, they use that power to help defeat him instead and receive their own partner Digimon.

As a powerful Ultimate form of Vamdemon from Adventure, BelialVamdemon has the same goal he did before: to break down the barriers between worlds, control both the Digital World and Real World, and fill everything with darkness.

Important Moments with Daisuke & Ken

“Terror! BelialVamdemon,” 02 #48: After reaching the World of Dreams, Oikawa harvests the Dark Seeds, and BelialVamdemon uses that power to revive himself.

“The Last Armor Evolution,” 02 #49: BelialVamdemon uses his Mind Illusion to trap the Chosen Children inside a dream of their perfect world, but Daisuke is unaffected and is able to help break the others out of their illusions.

“Our Digital World,” 02 #50: Daisuke, Ken, and all the Chosen Children around the world use the power of their dreams to defeat BelialVamdemon.

Between 02 & tri.

Armagemon is a more powerful Ultimate evolution of DiablomonĀ formed by a multitude of Kuramon that escape into the Real World. It appears in Tokyo Bay right by Rainbow Bridge, where it defeats OmegamonĀ and then Imperialdramon: Fighter Mode. However, Omegamon sacrifices the rest of their power to create the Omega Sword and help Imperialdramon change to Paladin Mode and defeat Armagemon.

Daisuke meets Nat-chan in New York City when he visits Mimi and Wallace in summer 2003. She traps them in an eternal winter, feeding off Daisuke’s unhappy emotions, and tries to get close to him and push Chibimon away because she is actually a Digimon without a human partner.

When Yggdrasill’s Gennai-like agent tampers with the system, shutting off the oxygen to Ken’s and Gennai’s tubes, the mortally wounded Nishijima tricks Taichi into the empty tube and sends them all back to the Real World.

Himekawa Maki

It seeks to reboot the Digital World to revive all the Digimon that were killed in the Real World and cannot revive as DigiTamas and use them to take over, then destroy the human world.

The only way to save their lives is to release the tubes.
