Description

Although his Dark Seed-induced persona as the Digimon Kaiser is cruel and sadistic, Ken is kind, gentle, tender, and polite at his core. Because of his guilt over his brother Osamu’s death and his time as the Digimon Kaiser, Ken tends to be self-sacrificing and believes he doesn’t deserve friendship or happiness. As he and Daisuke, and the others, become friends, Ken grows more comfortable, allowing him to open up and enjoy some happiness. He is even shown to be sassy with those he feels most comfortable. Even without the influence of the Dark Seed, Ken is intelligent and athletic; he continues to play soccer, can speak Spanish incredibly well, and enjoys origami and jogging with Wormmon.

Biography

Ken grew up in the shadow of his older brother Osamu, who was a child prodigy, and he often felt neglected by his parents. He idolized his brother, but due to jealousy, he often wished he were an only child.

At some point, a Digivice came out of Osamu’s computer in front of the brothers, and Osamu put it away and told Ken not to touch it so he could figure out what it was. At an unspecified time later, Ken opened the drawer, and when he touched the Digivice, it sucked him into the Digital World, where he met his partner Wormmon and helped Akiyama Ryou defeat Millenniumon. When Millenniumon died, it released its data in the form of Dark Seeds, and one of them embedded in the back of Ken’s neck when he pushed Ryou out of the way.

Ken was sick for several weeks, and when he returned to the Real World, he was returned to the same date and time he’d left due to Millenniumon’s distortion of time and space. When Osamu walked in, he discovered Ken holding the Digivice and slapped it out of his hand and demanded he leave their shared bedroom. Ken once again wished he were an only child, wishing for Osamu to disappear, and unfortunately, Osamu was hit by a truck not long later. Ken blamed himself.

Later, Ken received an email from an unknown source, later revealed to be Oikawa Yukio, who told him to use the Digivice as an escape from the pain of his life. When he took the Digivice, it dragged him to the Dark Ocean and transformed the Digivice into a black D-3, activating the Dark Seed, which increased his performance in school and sports, turning him into a rather famous child prodigy.

When he returned to the Digital World, he thought it was a video game, and he took on the avatar of the Digimon Kaiser and began to “play” the game in order to take over. He meant for the Digital World to be a means of escape and somewhere he could feel in control, yet chose to imitate his late brother Osamu’s appearance while doing so. He brought the Dark Towers from the Dark Ocean and created Evil Rings to enslave the Digimon.

During Digimon Adventure 02

At the start of the series, the Digimon Kaiser has upset the balance of the Digital World enough that Homeostasis calls on three new Chosen Children, Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori, and recalls Takeru and Hikari to defeat him. This proves incredibly difficult because he is a genius and ruthless due to the fact that he thinks the Digital World is a game and Digimon just data.

Ken meets the Chosen in person when the Tamachi FC soccer team plays a game against Odaiba Elementary. Ken is late but wins the game, only to be tackled and injured by Daisuke in the final seconds. Later, in the Digital World, Ken, as the Kaiser, humiliates Daisuke and reveals himself to be Ichijouji Ken.

Not long later, Ken runs away to the Digital World and begins a slow evolution into insanity. He develops the Evil Spiral to control Perfect Digimon, including Taichi’s Agumon as a dark MetalGreymon until the Chosen Children are able to free their friend.

Then, Ken starts to work on creating Chimeramon, a synthetic Digimon who he believes will be his true partner. He doesn’t realize that he is creating this Digimon because Millenniumon’s Dark Seed is trying to recreate Millenniumon and Chimeramon is one of two Digimon required to do that. In any event, Chimeramon is beyond his control, and Daisuke uses the Digimental of Miracles to Armor-evolve V-mon into Magnamon and defeat him. To do this, though, Wormmon sacrifices himself to give Magnamon his power.

Only then does Ken realize that Digimon are real and he has made a terrible mistake, but it is too late to save Wormmon. Ken sheds his Kaiser persona and goes home to figure out who he is and how and why he did something so terrible. He reflects on his childhood and his relationship with his brother, and after much introspection and an eerily comatose state, Ken returns to the Digital World to find Wormmon’s DigiTama.

Together, Ken and Wormmon work on destroying the Dark Towers to try to make up for what he did. Slowly, they become part of the team, although Daisuke wants him to join them immediately. Part of that process includes Stingmon Jogress-evolving with XV-mon to become Paildramon.

Ken opens up as he becomes more and more a part of the group and even invites everyone over for a Christmas party, which goes well aside from getting interrupted by rogue Digimon. Not long later, the group receives power from Qinglongmon, and Paildramon evolves to Imperialdramon. Then, the Chosen travel the world to return a bunch of Digimon to the Digital World, and Ken joins forces with Yamato in Mexico, where Ken is able to show off his Spanish skills.

When they return to Japan, the team fights a group of evil Digimon run by Demon, and Imperialdramon uses power from the other Digimon to change to Fighter Mode. Both Oikawa and Demon want the Dark Seed inside Ken’s neck, and Ken is forced to get on Oikawa’s truck to try to save a group of kidnapped children who want to be smart and athletic like Ken. Oikawa scans Ken’s Dark Seed and implants copies in the children, and not long later, the truck is stopped by Demon in Hikarigaoka. Daisuke, Lighdramon, and Wormmon rescue Ken, only for the team to have to fight Demon. Ken must open a gate to the World of Darkness and banish Demon there.

After a week of following the Dark Seed children around, the Chosen Children follow Oikawa and the children into the World of Dreams, where they discover Oikawa has been possessed by BelialVamdemon, who uses the power of the Dark Seeds to gain corporeal form. BelialVamdemon kills Archnemon and Mummymon, and everyone but Daisuke is too scared to fight him.

BelialVamdemon sends the Chosen Children into an illusion that is supposed to trap them in their greatest desires. In Ken’s vision, he sees his Kaiser persona punished and murdered for his crimes against Digimon and then his brother Osamu, who tells Ken he has already paid for his sins. But Wormmon helps him realize it is just a dream, and the rest of the Chosen Children arrive to support him.

Once the group is free of the illusion and motivated to fight, they blast BelialVamdemon into the Digital World and use the light from their Digivices to power Imperialdramon: Fighter Mode’s Giga Death cannon to defeat him.

Between Digimon Adventure 02 & tri.

On Valentine’s Day 2003, when Daisuke tries to act like a “bad boy” using the Digimon Kaiser persona, Ken is able to call upon the Digimental of Kindness and Armor-evolve Wormmon into Pucchiemon. Together, they are able to snap Daisuke out of it.

A month later, during the spring break between fifth and sixth grade, Ken and Daisuke race around Tokyo, especially near Shibuya Station, to gather Kuramon and send them to Koushirou. When Omegamon and Armagemon arrive in Tokyo Bay, they have to run all the way to Rainbow Bridge (until Jou acquired them bicycles) to join the fight. Imperialdramon: Fighter Mode is not enough to defeat Armagemon, but Omegamon gives them their power, transforming Imperialdramon into Paladin Mode, who is able to defeat Armagemon. Afterward, everyone is ready to take a nap, and Ken and Daisuke, along with their Digimon, curl up to sleep together.

In spring 2003, Ken reflects on his brother and his time as the Digimon Kaiser, and he is obviously in a much better place emotionally. He feels that he has learned a lot, much of it thanks to Osamu. During this time, Ken starts jogging with Wormmon daily.

During Digimon Adventure tri.

Ken, along with Daisuke, Miyako, and Iori, are defeated by Alphamon, one of Yggdrasill’s henchmen, and considered missing by the government agency dealing with the Digimon sightings. The group is held prisoner in tubes in an underground chamber by Yggdrasill with assistance from Himekawa Maki while another of Yggdrasill’s agents takes on Ken’s form of the Digimon Kaiser while in the Real World. The chamber is discovered by Taichi and Nishijima Daigo in the final movie, and the group is returned to Earth and hospitalized.

Between Digimon Adventure tri. & Kizuna

Ken attends high school and graduates before starting at a four-year college to study psychology. Sometime during this time period, he cuts his hair.

During Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna
